When you start a new venture the fastest route to success is to determine first what you need to know and second to go learn it. Having a successful online business is no different. Many adverts you see will claim that anyone, man or woman, student or professional has an equal chance to earn money online.

The key question is how much and what effort is required? You must ask yourself is that really what I want to do?

You may chose to use the more effective and lucrative method of developing your own website to sell products from. Here you will need to learn how to identify the most profitable products, how to develop a website and how to promote that website so that it ranks high in the search engines and so gives you the most traffic from potential buyers.

You will need to learn how to generate content relevant to your niche, how to build and maintain a list of targeted buyers. What you can do to keep people interested and maximise the number who actually buy from you.

You will need to learn how to build links and back links to your site so that you do not pay for expensive advertising like google's pay per click. Backlinks and Search Engine Optimisation are the foundation of free traffic to a website.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is where you produce a website that will rank highly in the search engines. So for example, lets say you have a website that sells products for the building trade. You will need to make sure your site appears on the first page of search results when someone enters the search term "building tools" and so on. Here you will need to make sure your page titles and meta tags of the site contain the best performing keywords. This will optimise your search engine results and increase your rankings. This is called on site optimisation. You will also need to generate a very high volume of links back to your site to complete SEO.

You will need to learn about keywords and how to find the ones with least competition and how to most effectively use those you have found.

You may also chose to learn about the art of writing articles, creating blogs and contributing to forums, placing press releases and so on. These are all effective methods to generate targeted buyers to your site.

All these techniques will take time to learn, however be assured that you can start making money with only the surface level of knowledge. So that you can earn while you learn and deepen your knowledge.
